According to David Gregory, Landscape Architect from JPE Design Studio, this “rethink” of urban landscapes has already been successfully applied overseas and is starting to gather momentum here in Australia with the establishment of initiatives such as the VEIL Food Map, which charts the location of community gardens and urban food production within Melbourne. “The success of such initiatives is driven by the local community with volunteer groups established to manage the maintenance of trees and gardens, and has the potential for local schools to involve students as part of their learning,” Gregory said...

PARK IT!

Park(ing) Day was started in San Francisco by arts collective Rebar in 2005 and has grown to involve about 500 installations in more than 100 cities. Based on the idea that paying a parking meter is like “renting” a public space, so instead of parking a car, why not park something else? Twelve eye catching and diverse creative installations sprung up in CBD streets, stopping city pedestrians in their tracks.

The JPE team encouraged members of the public to map their journey through Adelaide, provide their ideas on what a green city should be (more bicycles & public transport - fewer cars!), or simply pause and enjoy the moment...

MOVING WITH THE TIMES

Adelaide’s longest standing architectural practice, JPE Design Studio, has relocated to purpose-built offices in Gilles St.  The firm will celebrate its 160th birthday on 7th September in 2011 but has started the celebrations early with its recent move into the “Wave” building, a mixed use multi-storey development just off King William St in the city’s southern corner. The fourth floor office space will double as a gallery and display area for local artists, designers, thinkers and students to display their work and to interact, according to Director Adrian Evans...
