Wigley Reserve Playspace & Fitness Hub
The City of Holdfast Bay engaged JPE Design Studio for the upgrade and development of a prominent and valued reserve within Glenelg North, Wigley Reserve. The playspace and fitness hub design creates fresh and vibrant play opportunities that are more integrated within Wigley Reserve as a whole. The design draws inspiration from the gentle sweeping and mounding dunes which once inhabited the Patawalonga estuary region. Combined with subtle features throughout which speak to marine and aquatic themes, the new playspace fosters an understanding of place whilst allowing imaginations to run wild and create new stories.
As a regional playspace, the need to provide an exciting and inclusive environment was paramount to the design. With a particular focus on inclusivity and sensory elements, the playspace offers a spectrum of play opportunities from large scale climbing structures to immersive nature spaces. The dramatic shade structure and climbing tunnel work together as the cornerstone of the new Wigley Reserve playspace. An architectural feature that acts as a beacon for the site; the custom shade structure drapes and folds to reveal waterfront views and invites the community into the space.
